Codex (Mayan Codices)

The Codex refers to ancient Mayan manuscripts made from bark paper, folded into books, that contain sacred texts, astronomical data, calendars, and historical records. These codices were created by Mayan scribes before Spanish conquest and are valuable for understanding Mayan civilization. Only a few survive today due to destruction by conquistadors and humid conditions. They are written in hieroglyphics and often feature intricate illustrations, combining art and writing to preserve Mayan knowledge and beliefs.
