Coccidioides

Coccidioides is a type of fungus found in soil primarily in the southwestern United States, Central America, and parts of South America. When soil containing the fungus is disturbed, spores become airborne and can be inhaled. In some people, these spores can cause a respiratory illness called coccidioidomycosis or "Valley Fever," which may resemble flu symptoms. Most healthy individuals recover without treatment, but others, especially those with weakened immune systems, may develop more severe infections. Proper prevention includes avoiding dusty areas and using masks when working with soil in endemic regions.
