Coal-to-Liquids Process

Coal-to-liquids (CTL) is a process that converts coal into liquid fuels like diesel and jet fuel. It involves first transforming coal into a gas called synthesis gas (syngas) through heating and chemical reactions. Then, the syngas undergoes a chemical process called Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, where it’s converted into liquid hydrocarbons. These liquids can be refined into usable transportation fuels. CTL is used to produce fuels domestically, especially where oil resources are limited, but it is energy-intensive and can produce higher carbon emissions compared to conventional oil refining.
