Coal Tar Pitch

Coal tar pitch is a thick, black, and sticky substance derived from the destructive distillation of coal tar, a byproduct of coal processing. It is rich in complex organic compounds known as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The material is primarily used in industrial applications such as the production of electrodes for electric arc furnaces, roofing, waterproofing, and as a binder in asphalt. Due to its chemical composition, it has adhesive and insulating properties, but it also contains substances that can be hazardous to health if not handled properly.
