Coal Tar Pavement Sealants

Coal tar pavement sealants are black liquids applied to asphalt surfaces like driveways and parking lots to protect them from damage, such as cracks and weathering. They create a protective barrier that prolongs the pavement’s lifespan and improves appearance. Made from coal tar, a byproduct of coal processing, these sealants are effective but contain chemicals called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which can be harmful to human health and the environment. Due to health concerns, many regions now recommend or require alternative sealants that do not contain coal tar.
