coagulase-positive staphylococci

Coagulase-positive staphylococci are a group of bacteria that can cause infections in humans, with the most well-known being Staphylococcus aureus. They produce an enzyme called coagulase, which allows them to clot plasma (the liquid part of blood). This ability helps the bacteria evade the immune system and establish infections, such as skin abscesses, wound infections, or more serious conditions like pneumonia or bloodstream infections. Identifying coagulase activity is important because it distinguishes dangerous, infection-causing strains like S. aureus from other less harmful staphylococci.
