CO2 System (carbon dioxide system)
The CO2 system in the body helps regulate blood pH and oxygen delivery by managing carbon dioxide (CO2). When cells produce CO2 as a waste product, it dissolves in the blood and forms carbonic acid through a reaction with water. This acid can release hydrogen ions, influencing blood acidity. The lungs play a key role by removing CO2 through breathing, which helps maintain a stable pH. Additionally, the kidneys assist by excreting hydrogen ions and reabsorbing bicarbonate, the buffer that neutralizes excess acid. Together, these mechanisms keep the blood's pH balanced, ensuring proper bodily function.
