COINTELPRO (Counter Intelligence Program) was a series of secret FBI activities aimed at surveilling, infiltrating, discrediting, and disrupting political organizations deemed subversive or radical during the 1950s to 1970s. It targeted groups like civil rights activists, socialist organizations, and anti-war protesters. While intended to protect national security, COINTELPRO often violated individuals' civil liberties by using illegal tactics such as spying, spreading false information, and COINTELPRO's activities were later exposed, leading to widespread criticism of government overreach and the importance of safeguarding constitutional rights.
