Clue cells

Clue cells are a type of skin cell found on the vaginal lining that are covered with numerous bacteria. Their presence is a key indicator of bacterial vaginosis, a common imbalance of bacteria in the vagina. When a healthcare provider examines a vaginal sample under a microscope, clue cells appear as vaginal cells densely coated with bacteria, making their borders less distinct. Detecting clue cells helps diagnose bacterial vaginosis, which can cause discomfort and increase the risk of other infections. Treatment typically involves antibiotics to restore healthy bacterial balance.
