Civilian Public Service

Civilian Public Service (CPS) was a program during World War II that allowed conscientious objectors—individuals who refused military combat for ethical or religious reasons—to fulfill alternative service. Instead of fighting, these men contributed through community projects, forestry work, and public health efforts. Managed by the U.S. government, CPS provided a structured way for them to serve the country without violating their beliefs. It helped demonstrate respect for personal convictions while supporting national needs during wartime, and it laid groundwork for future recognition of alternative service options.
