Civic Space
Civic space refers to the environment that allows individuals and organizations to freely express their opinions, participate in public life, and advocate for change without undue restriction or fear of reprisal. It encompasses the freedoms of speech, association, and assembly, as well as the rule of law and access to information. A healthy civic space supports active citizen engagement, diversity of viewpoints, and accountability of governments and institutions. When civic space is open and protected, society can progress through open dialogue and collective action; when it’s limited or threatened, civic participation becomes difficult or dangerous.
