Circadian entrainment
Circadian entrainment is the process by which our internal biological clock aligns with the external environment, primarily the 24-hour light-dark cycle. This synchronization helps regulate daily physiological and behavioral functions, such as sleep-wake patterns, hormone release, and body temperature. Light exposure, especially natural sunlight, is the main cue that adjusts our internal clock to match the day-night cycle, ensuring optimal functioning. Proper entrainment is essential for maintaining health and well-being, while disruptions—like shift work or irregular schedules—can lead to sleep problems and other health issues.
