The Chumash Tribe is a Native American group traditionally located along California’s coast, from Malibu to San Luis Obispo. They have a rich cultural heritage, with a history of skilled craftsmanship, fishing, and trading. The Chumash are known for their advanced plank-built canoes called tomols, which facilitated maritime navigation and commerce. Their society included complex spiritual beliefs, social structures, and art. Today, the Chumash continue to preserve their language, traditions, and heritage, actively maintaining cultural practices and engaging in efforts to recognize and honor their history and sovereignty.
