Christchurch Earthquakes
The Christchurch Earthquakes refer to a series of significant earthquakes that struck the Canterbury region of New Zealand, primarily on September 4, 2010, and February 22, 2011. The most devastating, the February quake, had a magnitude of 6.3 and caused extensive damage to buildings, infrastructure, and resulted in 185 fatalities. These earthquakes occurred because of tectonic activity along the fault lines in the region, highlighting the area's seismic vulnerability. The events led to major rebuilding efforts, changes in building codes, and increased awareness of earthquake preparedness in New Zealand.
