Chondrocalcinosis
Chondrocalcinosis is a condition where calcium crystals deposit in the cartilage, the smooth tissue covering bones at joints. This buildup can cause joint pain, swelling, and stiffness, especially in older adults. It is often associated with a type of arthritis called calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease (CPPD). While some people experience significant symptoms, others may have calcium deposits without noticeable issues. The exact cause isn't always clear but can be linked to aging, joint injury, or certain medical conditions. Diagnosis usually involves imaging tests like X-rays, which reveal the calcium deposits in the cartilage.
