Choeung Ek (Killing Fields)
Choeung Ek, known as the Killing Fields, is a somber site near Phnom Penh, Cambodia, where over 17,000 victims of the Khmer Rouge regime were executed and buried during the late 1970s. Under Pol Pot's rule, millions of people suffered from forced labor, imprisonment, and mass killings aimed at creating an agrarian communist society. Today, Choeung Ek serves as a memorialization site, with mass graves, a memorial stupa containing human skulls, and educational exhibits that honor the victims and promote awareness of this tragic period in history.
