Chinese Canadian history

Chinese Canadian history began in the 19th century when Chinese laborers immigrated to Canada, particularly during the Gold Rush and to build the Transcontinental Railway. Despite their contributions, they faced significant discrimination, including the Chinese Head Tax and exclusionary policies. The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1923 effectively banned Chinese immigration until its repeal in 1947. The community gradually fought for civil rights, gaining recognition and contributions acknowledged. Today, Chinese Canadians are an integral part of Canada’s multicultural society, celebrating their heritage while continuing to address issues of equity and representation.
