China (Irrigation history)

China’s irrigation history dates back thousands of years, beginning with early flood control and water management systems around the Yellow River. The ancient Chinese developed sophisticated methods, such as canals, dams, and terracing, to support agriculture and prevent flooding. The notable Dujiangyan Irrigation System, built over 2,000 years ago, ingeniously manages river flow without dams. Over centuries, Chinese engineers expanded and improved irrigation to sustain large populations, leading to the world's earliest extensive water management infrastructure, which continues to influence modern irrigation practices in China today.
