Chile (Pinochet era)

The Pinochet era refers to the period in Chile from 1973 to 1990 when General Augusto Pinochet led a military dictatorship following a coup that ousted democratically elected President Salvador Allende. Pinochet's regime was marked by widespread human rights abuses, including torture and disappearances of political opponents. While it implemented neoliberal economic reforms that spurred growth, the period was controversial due to the absence of political freedoms and repression. Pinochet maintained power until a national plebiscite in 1988 led to a return to democracy, but the legacy of his rule remains a contentious issue in Chilean society.
