Child Custody Law

Child custody law determines which parent or guardian has legal responsibility and decision-making authority for a child's welfare after a separation or divorce. Courts prioritize the child's best interests, considering factors like safety, stability, and the child's relationship with each parent. Custody can be granted as sole (to one parent) or joint (shared by both parents). Custody arrangements also specify physical custody, meaning where the child lives. Courts aim to promote the child's well-being and may modify custody orders if circumstances change. Legal custody involves decision-making rights, while physical custody pertains to day-to-day care.
