Chief Illiniwek
Chief Illiniwek was a mascot character used by the University of Illinois to represent their sports teams. Portrayed by a student performing traditional dance and wearing Native American-inspired attire, it aimed to evoke school spirit. However, many Native American groups and others criticized it for cultural insensitivity and stereotyping. In 2007, the university retired the mascot, acknowledging that it was offensive despite its historical intentions. The decision reflected a broader movement to respect Indigenous cultures and avoid using Native imagery or mascots in ways that perpetuate stereotypes.
