Chessie System

The Chessie System was a major American freight railroad operating primarily in the eastern United States from 1972 to 1986. It was created through the merger of three regional railroads: the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, and the Western Maryland Railway. Named after the "Chessie Cat" mascot, a stylized kitten, the system was known for efficient freight transportation across a large network. In 1980, it became part of CSX Corporation, which integrated it into one of the largest freight rail companies in North America. Chessie System played a significant role in freight logistics and regional economic development during its operation.
