Cherokee (Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians)

The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians is a federally recognized Native American tribe located in western North Carolina. They are descendants of Cherokee people who remained in the southeastern U.S. after the forced removal known as the Trail of Tears in the 1830s. The tribe maintains a rich cultural heritage, language, and traditional practices, while also engaging in modern governance and economic development. Their principal community is the Qualla Boundary, a land trust area near Cherokee town. The tribe’s government operates educational, health, and social programs to support its members and preserve Cherokee culture and traditions for future generations.
