Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant
The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine was a Soviet-designed facility that used nuclear reactions to generate electricity. On April 26, 1986, a safety test went wrong, causing a powerful explosion and fire in one of its reactors. This released large amounts of radioactive materials into the environment, contaminating the surrounding area. The accident was one of the worst nuclear disasters in history, leading to the evacuation of thousands of people and long-term exclusion zone. Today, the site is stabilized with a large protective structure, but the area remains unsafe for permanent habitation due to residual radiation.
