ChemCam

ChemCam, short for Chemistry and Camera complex, is a scientific instrument on NASA’s Mars rovers. It combines a laser and spectrometers to analyze rocks and soil remotely, without needing to scoop or drill. The laser zaps a target, creating a small plasma cloud, and the spectrometers analyze the light emitted to determine the material’s composition. This allows scientists to identify minerals and elements from a distance, helping them understand Mars’ geology and history efficiently and safely. ChemCam provides rapid, detailed chemical information that guides exploration and sample collection missions.
