Chechen Wars
The Chechen Wars were two conflicts between Russia and Chechnya, a region in the North Caucasus. The first (1994-1996) stemmed from Chechnya's declaration of independence after the Soviet Union's fall, leading Russia to try to reassert control, resulting in severe violence. The second (1999-2009) was triggered by insurgency and fears of instability, prompting Russia to launch a renewed military campaign. These wars caused extensive destruction, loss of life, and suffering, highlighting the complex struggle over national identity, independence, and regional security.
