Chauri Bearer
The Chauri Bazaar incident occurred in 1922 during India’s struggle for independence. It involved a violent clash where a group of protesting villagers, frustrated with British repression, attacked a police station and set fire to police guards. This event symbolized the intensity of the independence movement and highlighted the need for non-violent resistance. Mahatma Gandhi condemned the violence and called for non-violent protests going forward. The incident prompted Gandhi to pause his civil disobedience campaign temporarily, emphasizing his principle of non-violence (ahimsa) as essential for achieving true independence.
