Charles Albert of Sardinia

Charles Albert of Sardinia (1798–1849) was a king of Sardinia who played a key role in shaping modern Italy. He initially fought for liberal reforms and tried to strengthen his kingdom but faced opposition. In 1848, during revolutionary uprisings across Europe, he declared war on Austria to unify Italy, leading to some early successes. However, his efforts were hampered by military defeats, and he ultimately abdicated in favor of his son. His reign was marked by efforts toward Italian unification and modernization, but he did not live to see Italy united.
