Chao Anouvong

Chao Anouvong was the last king of the Lao Kingdom of Lan Xang and later king of the Kingdom of Vientiane (around 1778–1829). He tried to regain Lao independence from Siam (Thailand) by leading a rebellion in 1827. His rebellion initially gained some ground but was ultimately crushed by the better-armed Siamese forces, leading to the destruction of Vientiane and significant loss of Lao sovereignty. Anouvong's actions reflected his desire to preserve Lao independence and culture, but his uprising ended in failure, resulting in increased Siamese control over Lao territories.
