Chamaeleon Cloud Complex

The Chamaeleon Cloud Complex is a large region of space filled with cold gas and dust, located about 500 light-years away in the Chamaeleon constellation. It's part of our galaxy and serves as a stellar nursery where new stars are born. Within this cloud complex, dense areas can collapse under gravity, leading to star formation, while other parts are more diffuse. The clouds also contain dark patches that block light from behind, making them visible as dark silhouettes against brighter backgrounds. Overall, it’s a key area for studying how stars and planetary systems originate.
