cervical incompetence

Cervical incompetence, also called cervical insufficiency, is a condition where the cervix—the lower part of the uterus—weakens and opens too early during pregnancy. This can lead to pregnancy loss or premature birth, especially in the second trimester. It often occurs without pain or contractions. Factors like prior surgeries, infections, or certain developmental issues can contribute. Diagnosis often involves monitoring symptoms or imaging tests. Treatment may include a cervical stitch called a cerclage to reinforce the cervix and reduce the risk of early opening. Early detection and management are important for maintaining a healthy pregnancy.
