Cerebrospinal Fluid Leak
A cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak occurs when the fluid that cushions and surrounds the brain and spinal cord escapes through a hole or tear in the membranes called the dura mater. This can happen after injury, surgery, or spontaneously. Symptoms often include headaches that worsen when standing, neck stiffness, dizziness, or changes in vision. The leak can lead to low CSF levels, causing brain sagging and increased risk of complications like infections. Treatment may involve bed rest, addressing the tear with a blood patch, or surgery to seal the leak and restore normal fluid levels.
