Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infection (CLABSI)
Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infection (CLABSI) is a serious infection that occurs when bacteria or other germs enter the bloodstream through a central line—a long, thin tube inserted into a large vein to deliver medication or fluids. This infection can cause symptoms like fever, chills, and make the patient very ill. CLABSI is often acquired in hospitals, especially among patients with weakened immune systems or those needing long-term IV access. Preventing CLABSI involves strict hand hygiene, proper catheter care, and maintaining a sterile environment during insertion and maintenance of the central line.
