Central Hypoventilation Syndrome

Central Hypoventilation Syndrome (CHS) is a rare condition where the brain's control over breathing is impaired, especially during sleep. This results in inadequate ventilation, leading to higher carbon dioxide levels and lower oxygen levels in the blood. Individuals with CHS often breathe normally when awake but may struggle to breathe deeply or effectively when asleep, sometimes requiring ventilatory support. The condition can be congenital (present from birth) or acquired due to brain injury. CHS highlights the importance of the brain’s role in regulating automatic breathing and may involve genetic factors or underlying neurological issues.
