Center-Periphery Theory

Center-Periphery Theory explains how economic and political power tends to concentrate in a core area (the center), which drives development, innovation, and wealth. Surrounding this are peripheral regions (the periphery) that are often less developed, reliant on the core for investment and resources. These peripheral areas may experience slower growth, limited infrastructure, and economic dependency. The theory highlights the imbalance between the developed core and less-developed periphery, influencing patterns of regional development, migration, and international relations, often reinforcing existing inequalities between center and periphery regions.
