Cell encapsulation

Cell encapsulation is a technique where living cells are enclosed within a semi-permeable barrier, often made of materials like gel or polymers. This barrier allows essential nutrients and oxygen to enter, and waste products to exit, enabling the cells to survive and function. At the same time, it protects the cells from the immune system and prevents them from escaping. This method is used in therapies, such as delivering insulin-producing cells for diabetes, or in biotechnological applications, to safely harness the benefits of the cells while minimizing immune responses.
