CDR (Committees for the Defence of the Republic)
The Committees for the Defence of the Republic (CDR) are grassroots groups in Catalonia formed during the Spanish independence movement. Comprising local citizens, they act as community-based organizations that mobilize support, coordinate protests, and promote pro-independence activities. The CDRs are often involved in grassroots organizing, information-sharing, and advocating for Catalonia’s independence from Spain. While their members operate independently across neighborhoods and towns, they share common goals of defending and promoting Catalan self-determination. The CDRs have been viewed both as vital community proponents of independence and, by authorities, as controversial actors involved in activism and protests.
