CCA (Chromated Copper Arsenate)
Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA) is a chemical preservative applied to wood to prevent decay, insects, and fungi. It contains copper, arsenic, and chromium compounds, which work together to protect the wood. CCA-treated wood is durable and suitable for outdoor use, such as decks and fences. However, due to concerns about arsenic, a toxic element, its use has been restricted in some applications, especially for residential furniture and playground equipment. Proper handling—such as washing hands after contact and avoiding inhalation of dust—is recommended when working with CCA-treated wood.
