cauda equina syndrome

Cauda equina syndrome is a serious condition affecting the bundle of nerves at the lower end of the spinal cord. These nerves control sensation and movement in the hips, legs, and bladder. When compressed or damaged—often by a herniated disc, tumor, or injury—normal nerve function is disrupted. Symptoms can include severe lower back pain, weakness or numbness in the legs, loss of sensation in the groin or saddle area, and difficulty controlling bladder or bowel functions. Prompt medical treatment is critical, as delayed care can lead to permanent nerve damage and loss of function.
