Cation channels

Cation channels are specialized proteins in cell membranes that allow positively charged ions, called cations (like sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium), to pass into or out of the cell. They help regulate key functions such as nerve signaling, muscle contraction, and maintaining the cell's electrical balance. These channels open or close in response to various signals, acting as gates that control ion flow. Proper function of cation channels is vital for healthy communication within the body’s cells, especially in the nervous and muscular systems.
