Catenary cable
A catenary cable is a flexible, hanging wire or rope that naturally assumes a curve called a catenary when supported at both ends under its own weight. This shape represents the lowest possible energy configuration for a hanging chain or cable. Engineers often use catenary cables in power lines, bridges, and suspension structures because their shape distributes tension efficiently, minimizing stress and material use. The catenary curve results from the balance between gravity pulling downward and the tension in the cable pulling upward, leading to a smooth, symmetric arch that optimizes stability and strength.
