Cat visual system
Cats have a highly specialized visual system adapted for hunting. Their eyes are large relative to their head, providing excellent low-light vision with a high number of rod cells, which help detect movement in dim environments. They have a visual field of about 200 degrees, allowing wide peripheral awareness. Cats’ eyes contain a tapetum lucidum, a layer that reflects light to enhance night vision. Their color perception is limited mainly to blues and yellows, with less sensitivity to reds. Overall, their visual system prioritizes detecting movement and spatial awareness, making them effective predators in various lighting conditions.
