Castle Garden

Castle Garden was New York City’s first official immigration processing center, operating from 1855 to 1890 before the Ellis Island facility opened. Located in Castle Clinton in Battery Park, it served as a welcome and screening point for millions of immigrants arriving by ship. The center handled tasks such as health inspections, legal documentation, and registration, facilitating the entry of newcomers into the United States. Its role was crucial in managing immigration flow during a period of significant migration, helping to streamline entry procedures before the development of dedicated immigration stations like Ellis Island.
