Cast (orthopaedic)
An orthopedic cast is a protective shell made of materials like plaster or fiberglass that surrounds an injured limb, such as a broken bone, to stabilize and immobilize it. This immobilization helps the bone or soft tissue heal properly by preventing movement that could worsen the injury. The cast is custom-fitted to the patient’s limb, allowing access for cleanup or adjustments, and is typically worn for several weeks depending on the injury. It provides support, keeps the injured area in the correct position, and reduces pain during the healing process.
