cassette tapes

Cassette tapes are magnetic tape storage devices used to record and play back audio. They consist of a plastic cassette housing that contains a spool of thin magnetic tape. When played on a tape deck, the tape moves past a magnetic head that reads or writes audio signals by detecting or altering the magnetic fields on the tape. Cassettes were popular for music, recording, and portable listening from the 1960s through the early 2000s, offering a compact, analog method of capturing sound. Despite being largely replaced by digital formats, they remain valued for their nostalgic appeal and simplicity.
