CASEL's 5 competencies

CASEL’s five social-emotional learning (SEL) competencies are key skills that help individuals succeed academically, socially, and emotionally. Self-awareness involves recognizing your own emotions and thoughts. Self-management is about controlling impulses and managing stress. Social awareness means understanding and respecting others' feelings and perspectives. Relationship skills involve communicating effectively and building healthy connections. Responsible decision-making includes making ethical choices and solving problems thoughtfully. Together, these competencies foster emotional intelligence, enabling individuals to navigate life’s challenges with resilience, empathy, and effective interpersonal skills.
