cardiopulmonary bypass machine
A cardiopulmonary bypass machine, often called a heart-lung machine, temporarily takes over the function of the heart and lungs during surgery. It oxygenates and circulates blood outside the body, allowing surgeons to operate on a still, bloodless heart. The machine removes carbon dioxide from the blood and adds oxygen, maintaining proper blood flow and oxygen levels. This technology is essential for procedures like coronary artery bypass or heart valve repair, ensuring tissues receive oxygen and nutrients while the heart is temporarily stopped. Once surgery is complete, the machine is weaned off as the heart resumes pumping on its own.
