
Carbon sinks
Carbon sinks are natural or artificial systems that absorb and store carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the atmosphere, helping to reduce greenhouse gases and mitigate climate change. Examples include forests, which absorb CO₂ through photosynthesis; oceans, which dissolve and store CO₂ in water; and soil, which traps carbon in organic matter. These sinks balance out emissions from activities like burning fossil fuels. Protecting and enhancing carbon sinks is vital for maintaining a stable climate, as they act as natural buffers against the increasing levels of CO₂ contributed by human activity.
