Captains Regent
The Captains Regent are the heads of state of San Marino, a small republic in Italy. They are elected every six months by the Grand and General Council, San Marino's parliament. Their role is largely ceremonial, representing the state internally and abroad, and ensuring continuity of government. The Captains Regent serve as a pair—two leaders—to promote balance and consensus, and typically hold office from April 1 to October 1 and October 1 to March 31. This ancient tradition emphasizes stability and shared leadership, reflecting San Marino's unique political history and commitment to collective governance.
