Capstan (ship)

A capstan is a rotating device used on ships to manage heavy ropes and cables, particularly for anchoring and mooring. It consists of a vertical shaft that turns, allowing crew members to pull on lines wound around it. By increasing the leverage, a capstan makes it easier to move heavy loads, such as raising an anchor or adjusting sails. Often powered manually with a hand crank or foot pedal, modern ships may use electric or hydraulic systems.
